The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued a $3,137 penalty to Mt. Hood Forest Products, LLC, for failing to collect and analyze samples of stormwater runoff at its facility at 4865 State Highway 35 in Hood River. Mt. Hood’s failure to conduct the monitoring violates its stormwater discharge permit.

As part of the state’s continuing efforts to address toxic pollutants in the environment, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has released a draft list of priority persistent pollutants that have a documented affect on human health, wildlife and aquatic habitats. The draft list of pollutants, organized by chemical class as well as by degree of persistency in the environment, is available on DEQ’s Web site at http://www.deq.state.or.us/wq/SB737. A draft scientific report describing DEQ’s development of the list is available on the Web site as well.

Yesterday the federal Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit sided with Oregon and a coalition of 18 states and cities in a challenge to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) air pollution standards for fine particulate matter. As a result, EPA will have to reconsider and reissue its annual fine particulate standard at a level that provides an adequate margin of safety to protect public health.
