MONTHLY ENERGY REVIEW MAY 2010 RELEASE - May 27, 2010

Summary data on energy production, consumption, stocks, trade, and prices

The May 2010 Monthly Energy Review (MER), EIA’s primary report of recent energy statistics , was released on May 27, 2010. Preliminary MER data indicate the following changes in the first 2 months of 2010 compared with the first 2 months of 2009:

* U.S. primary energy consumption rose almost 3%, due to increases in the consumption of natural gas, coal, and biomass.

* U.S. energy net imports decreased 14%, due primarily to a decrease in petroleum net imports and, to a lesser extent, an increase in coal net exports.

* Total energy consumed by the residential and industrial sectors increased by 6% and 4%, respectively, due primarily to increases in the consumption of natural gas.

The MER provides monthly and annual data on total energy production, consumption, and trade; energy prices; overviews of petroleum, natural gas, coal, electricity, nuclear energy, renewable energy, and international petroleum; carbon dioxide emissions; and data unit conversions. See What’s New in the MER for a record of changes.

(ATLANTA - May 27, 2010) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold two public meetings to discuss the Port of Huntington Tri-State Geographic Collaborative - an initiative that addresses the importance of environmental compliance for the area’s land, air and water resources.

To make sure citizens in the communities surrounding the Port area have an opportunity to comment on the collaborative goals and the overall strategies, EPA will host two public meetings:

7 p.m., June 1, 2010 - Tuesday
Marshall University Memorial Student Center
Fifth Avenue
Marshall University, Huntington, WVa

7 p.m., June 2, 2010 - Wednesday
Wilson University Student Union
West Virginia State University

The Port Collaborative plan includes assessing the environmental impacts of the Port operations on the surrounding communities, reducing the amount of pollution being released into the environment, and building community skills to help ensure the long-term protection of the environment and public health.
