Contact: Laura Niles, 404-562-8353, niles.laura@epa.gov

(Atlanta, Ga. - August 4, 2008) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is providing $25,000 in technical assistance for a Brownfields Sustainability Pilot in Valley, Ala. EPA will work with the City of Valley to incorporate sustainable redevelopment into the planning, design and implementation of its brownfields projects.
The brownfields projects in Valley include sustainable redevelopment of the Langdale and Riverdale mills. The City of Valley owns these abandoned mills and would like to promote sustainable redevelopment by taking an inventory of mill contents, evaluating the potential for reuse and recycling, and developing materials to assist in mill redevelopment projects. Valley has received EPA Brownfields Assessment and Cleanup Grants for each mill and is planning a mixed use redevelopment for the mills.
Brownfields are sites where expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant. In January 2002, President Bush signed the Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act, which increased funding, expanded authority, and provided liability protection to help communities revitalize brownfields. EPA provides grants, technical assistance and training to support local brownfields efforts.
