DEC Improvements Underway at North/South Lake Campground
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) today announced that public access infrastructure improvements are underway at North/South Lake campground in the town of Hunter, Greene County. The $200,000 improvements are designed to improve public access to the North Lake beach and day use area and are outlined in the recently adopted North/South Lake Unit Management Plan (UMP) amendment.
“This project will make the North Lake beach and day use area more user friendly to visitors of all abilities,” said DEC Region 4 Director Keith Goertz. “These improvements, through Governor Cuomo’s Adventure NY Initiative, are just a sample of the recreational upgrades that New York has underway to better serve everyone who wants to enjoy our state’s great outdoors.”
The project includes many infrastructure improvements to the North Lake beach and day use area that will improve accessibility to people with disabilities, including:
* construction of an accessible stone and concrete path with two new accessible benches;
* construction of an accessible wooden fishing platform;
* construction of an accessible concrete path from an accessible parking area to changing rooms;
* construction of an accessible boardwalk providing water access for people with disabilities
* construction of an accessible wooden ramp from the parking lot to the beach;
* improvements to the changing room building.
The UMP amendment [ http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/24487.html#ump ] is available on DEC’s website.
The renovations build upon the $150,000 public access and facility upgrades announced in the summer of 2017. This year’s additional $200,000 in improvements are expected complete by the fall of 2019.
North/South Lake campground is one of the most heavily used DEC campgrounds. It first opened in 1926, and is located two miles northeast of the hamlet of Haines Falls, on County Route 18. The campground is on the eastern edge of the Catskill escarpment in the Catskill Forest Preserve and is home to historic sites such as the Catskill Mountain House and Sunset Rock.
Under Governor Cuomo’s Adventure NY Initiative, DEC is making strategic investments to expand access to healthy, active outdoor recreation, connect more New Yorkers and visitors to nature and the outdoors, protect natural resources, and boost local economies. This initiative will support the completion of more than 75 projects over the next three years, ranging from improvements to youth camps and environmental education centers to new boat launches, duck blinds, and hiking trails.
